Kids Wetsuits – warmth, safety and comfort for water fun!

A kids wetsuit keeps children warm, protected and comfortable while playing in the water. It provides insulation against cold water, wind and sun exposure, allowing longer swimming sessions, splashing, SUP adventures or wave jumping in the sea, lake or pool – without getting cold or cutting the fun short.

How does a kids wetsuit work?

A kids wetsuit fits close to the body and traps a thin layer of water between the neoprene and the skin. This layer warms up from body heat and helps maintain a stable temperature, even in cooler water.

A children’s wetsuit:

  • protects against cold water, wind and minor abrasions
  • reduces heat loss
  • allows full freedom of movement
  • offers additional UV protection

It’s ideal for kids who love being in the water – even when they don’t want to get out.

Who is a kids wetsuit for?

A wetsuit for children is perfect for:

  • kids who spend long hours in the water
  • children who get cold easily
  • sensitive kids who feel cold even in summer
  • young explorers swimming in spring or autumn
  • beginners in swimming, surfing, snorkeling or SUP
  • playing in the sea, lakes, rivers or pools
  • school camps and first water adventures

Shorty or full wetsuit – which one to choose?

Short kids wetsuit (shorty)

  • ideal for summer
  • suitable for water above 18–20 °C
  • great for swimming, playing, SUP and beginner surfing
  • lightweight and very comfortable

Full kids wetsuit (fullsuit)

  • suitable for spring and autumn
  • full-body protection against cold water and wind
  • recommended for children who get cold quickly
  • typically available in 3/2 mm or 4–5 mm thickness

Wetsuit thickness guide for kids

Children cool down faster than adults, so choosing a slightly warmer option is often a good idea.

  • 1 mm → warm summer water

  • 2 mm → summer use (18–20 °C)

  • 3/2 mm → spring/autumn (12–17 °C)

  • 4–5 mm → cold water and wind (8–13 °C)

How to choose the right size?

  • O’Neill sizes generally match age (4–14 years)
  • the wetsuit should fit snugly, without folds
  • wrinkles under the armpits usually mean it’s too big
  • if it feels tight and restricts movement, it’s too small
  • older children may fit into adult XS or S sizes

Always check the size chart for exact measurements. Special sizes can be ordered if needed.

Why quality matters?

A high-quality kids wetsuit is:

  • more elastic → easier to put on and move in
  • softer and more skin-friendly
  • more durable → keeps its shape longer
  • warmer → reduces water flushing

O’Neill Ultraflex DS is an excellent choice thanks to its exceptional stretch and comfort, allowing kids to move freely during play or sports.
