Winter Beanies and Knitted Hats Made from Recycled Materials
A winter beanie is a soft knitted hat that covers your head and ears and protects them from cold and wind. In winter your head is often the only uncovered part of your body, so a warm beanie makes a big difference on a walk, a hike or by the water.
Our knitted beanies are made from 100% recycled polyester certified to GRS (Global Recycled Standard), produced from post-consumer plastic waste. Choose a classic knitted beanie with a turn-up cuff or a ribbed beanie with a warm fleece lining. All come in one size and are packed in a plastic-free biodegradable bag.
Which Winter Beanie Should I Choose?
| Where and how | What to choose |
|---|---|
| Everyday and in town | knitted beanie with a turn-up cuff |
| Very cold and windy days | fleece-lined beanie |
| Hiking and mountaineering (climbs and stops) | thinner breathable beanie + a lined one in your pack |
| SUP and cold days by the water | a beanie that dries fast + a neoprene cap for the water |
| After a cold water swim | lined beanie that warms wet hair straight away |
Recycled, Wool or Merino Beanie?
| Material | Properties |
|---|---|
| Recycled polyester | soft and stretchy + no itch, dries fast |
| Acrylic | cheap and warm + less breathable, pills quickly |
| Wool | very warm + can itch, dries slowly |
| Merino wool | warm and soft + no itch, but pricier and more delicate |
Recycled polyester is made from plastic waste such as bottles. GRS certification confirms the share of recycled material and checks how it's produced. A beanie made from recycled materials doesn't itch, dries quickly and is machine washable.
Fleece-Lined Beanies
A lined beanie has a knitted outer and a soft fleece lining inside. The fleece traps more warm air and closes the gaps in the knit that wind would otherwise blow through. That's why a lined beanie is warmer and suits the coldest days, winter hikes and warming up after a cold water swim.
Winter Beanies for Hiking and Mountaineering
On a climb you warm up and sweat, while at the top or in the shade you cool down fast. Choose a beanie that breathes and dries quickly, so damp hair doesn't leave you cold. On a windy ridge, a lined beanie is the most useful. For the rest of your cold-weather gear, see our waterproof winter jackets and parkas and technical midlayers.
Women's and Men's Winter Beanies – What Size Do I Need?
Our winter beanies are unisex and one size. The stretchy knit fits most head sizes, so they're just as suitable for women and men. A beanie should cover your ears and reach your eyebrows without pressing on your forehead. With the turn-up cuff, you decide how long or short you wear it.
Winter Beanies by the Water and for SUP
When paddling in winter or after a cold water swim, your head and ears are the first to cool down. A knitted beanie is for time above the water and after a swim, but don't wear it in the water, as it soaks up water and stops keeping you warm. If you might fall into cold water, choose a neoprene cap.
Who Is a Winter Beanie For?
- hikers and mountaineers,
- runners and cyclists in winter,
- paddlers and winter swimmers,
- dog walkers in any weather,
- anyone looking for a sustainable beanie made from recycled materials.
How to Care for a Knitted Beanie
Machine wash at 30 °C or by hand, without fabric softener, which mats the fibres. Dry it flat in the air so it keeps its shape. Don't dry it on a radiator or in a tumble dryer.
