Which pump or inflator should you choose?
SUP pumps fall into two basic groups: manual pumps and electric pumps or compressors. The right choice depends on how often you use the board, the size of the SUP, the required pressure and your personal preferences.
If you use your SUP occasionally or travel often, a manual pump is the most practical pick.
If you have multiple SUPs or want the fastest, least strenuous inflation, an electric inflator or compressor is a better solution.
Manual SUP pumps
Manual pumps are the most widespread and portable choice. They are light, easy to use and need no electricity, so they’re always available.
You’ll find:
- single‑action pumps that push air into the SUP only when you push the handle down,
- double‑action pumps that push air both when you push down and pull up.
Double action speeds up inflation, while single action is easier on your back.
Most manual pumps have a single cylinder, but some have two. Two‑cylinder pumps inflate very quickly at the start, then switch to one cylinder for easier reaching of the final pressure. These pumps noticeably reduce the time and effort required to inflate a SUP.
How to use a manual SUP pump correctly
Before starting, make sure the SUP valve is in the correct position. Connect the pump hose to the valve and start pumping. Continue until you reach the pressure recommended by the board manufacturer, usually shown on the board or in the manual.
Electric pumps and compressors for SUP
An electric SUP pump is ideal if you want fast, effortless inflation. You typically connect an electric inflator to a car battery or use a battery‑powered compressor that automatically inflates the board to the set pressure.
Electric compressors vary by power and maximum pressure. Commonly used are compressors for SUP up to about 16 psi, and compressors up to 20 or 22 psi.
A 20‑psi compressor suits boards that require higher pressure, greater stiffness or more frequent use.
A 16‑psi compressor is lighter, more portable and sufficient for most recreational SUPs.
Compressor adapters for SUP
A compressor adapter lets you inflate a SUP using a normal compressor, for example at a gas station or with a home compressor. The adapter connects the compressor’s Schrader valve to the SUP valve, enabling quick and easy inflation.
Dual adapters for pumps or compressors
With a dual adapter you can connect two manual pumps to one SUP at the same time, or combine a pump with a compressor. This is especially useful for larger SUP boards or when you want to inflate a SUP in the shortest possible time.
