Wing Foil Pumps – Wing Pumps With a Pressure Gauge and Adapters

A wing pump is a hand pump with a pressure gauge that you use to inflate your wing to the pressure the manufacturer recommends. A properly inflated wing is stiff, stable and responsive, while an underinflated one flexes and pulls less. That's why a wing foil pump has to show pressure accurately in the range wings work in.

What PSI Should My Wing Be?

Most wings are inflated to around 6–8 PSI, and the exact pressure is printed on the wing next to the valve. Check the pressure on the gauge, not by feel, as an underinflated wing and a correctly inflated one feel very similar to the touch. On one-pump wings, a single inflation fills both the leading edge and the strut.

Brands use different valves, so your pump needs the right nozzle. A wing pump adapter lets you inflate wings from different brands with the same pump, and a spare adapter comes in handy when you lose the original on the beach.

Can I Use a SUP Pump for My Wing?

You can, if it has the right nozzle and a gauge that reads low pressure accurately. SUP pumps are built for higher pressure, up to around 20 PSI, so their gauge isn't always accurate at 6–8 PSI. How to Care for Your Pump

After using your pump on the beach, clear out the sand and rinse it with fresh water, then dry the hose and nozzles. Grease the piston now and then with silicone grease so it seals and runs smoothly. Store it somewhere dry, out of the sun.

Can I overinflate my wing?

Yes. Too much pressure strains the seams and bladder and shortens your wing's lifespan. Never go above the pressure the manufacturer recommends.

Does wing pressure change in the sun?

Yes. In the heat the air expands and the pressure rises, while in cold water it drops. Don't leave an inflated wing in the sun.

Can I inflate my wing with an electric pump?

You can, if the electric pump has a nozzle for your valve and measures low pressure accurately. Set the target pressure and check it after inflating.

Why has my pump stopped inflating?

Usually because of sand in the piston, a worn seal or a badly fitted nozzle. Clean the pump, check the nozzle and grease the piston.
