Lightweight Waterproof Sports Jackets for Hiking, Cycling and Everyday Wear
A waterproof sports jacket is a light, stretchy outer layer that keeps out rain and wind while letting sweat escape, so you don't overheat on the move. When you don't need it, pack it into its own pocket or hood and stash it in your backpack. Wear it for hiking, cycling, SUP, travel or in town when the weather keeps changing.
For cold winter days and slow walking, see our warm waterproof winter jackets and parkas. When it cools down, add a technical midlayer under your light jacket.
Which Sports Jacket Should I Choose?
It depends on how much rain you expect and how hard you'll be moving.
| Activity | What to choose |
|---|---|
| Hiking and running (lots of movement, showers) | light jacket with pit zips that packs into a pocket |
| Cycling and travel (wind, changeable weather) | stretch jacket that packs into its own pocket or hood |
| All day outside, moderate rain | lightweight parka rated 10,000 mm with welded seams |
| After training, by the water (moving and resting) | lightweight parka with a thin fleece lining |
| Cold and slow walking | warm winter parka |
Waterproof and Breathability Ratings: What Do 5k and 10k Mean?
5k and 10k describe waterproofing in millimetres of water column; the second number (for example 5k/5k) is breathability in g/m² per 24 hours.
- 5,000 mm (5k) – a water-resistant jacket for showers, wind and light rain. Light and stretchy, for activities where you move a lot.
- 10,000 mm (10k) – waterproof in moderate rain and for longer spells outside.
- 30,000 g/m² breathability – very high. The jacket vents sweat even on fast walks and climbs, so you won't need to take it off as soon as you warm up.
When you're active, breathability matters as much as waterproofing: a jacket that doesn't breathe soaks you from the inside.
Packable and Stretch Jackets
Lightweight sports jackets are built for movement and for your backpack.
- Packs into a pocket or hood – the jacket turns into a small bundle you can carry all day.
- Four-way stretch – the fabric stretches in every direction, so it won't hold back your paddle strokes, climbs or pedalling.
- Pit zips – zipped underarm vents release heat when you warm up.
- Peaked hood – keeps rain off your face and on some models rolls away into the collar.
- Welded seams and water-resistant zips – stop water getting in through the seams and pockets.
Women's and Men's Sports Jackets
Women's sports jackets are shorter in the body and narrower at the waist, often with a fitted cut. Men's are broader in the shoulders and longer. Lightweight parkas are often unisex with a relaxed fit, leaving room for a midlayer underneath.
What Size Sports Jacket Do I Need?
Choose a sports jacket with room for a thin fleece or midlayer underneath, and one that doesn't pull across your back when you raise your arms. Sleeves should cover your wrists even with your arms stretched out on the bike. With a fitted cut, go up a size if you want to wear a thicker layer. You're welcome to try them on in our shop in Ljubljana.
Jackets for Hiking, Cycling and SUP
On a hike you switch between climbing, when you sweat, and stopping on a windy ridge, when you cool down fast. A light jacket that breathes evens this out, because you can keep it on or throw it on in a minute. On the bike, wind protection and a stretch cut matter most; on a SUP, choose a jacket that doesn't restrict paddling and dries quickly. On the water in colder months, a neoprene jacket is the better choice.
Who Else Are Waterproof Sports Jackets For?
- hikers and runners in changeable weather,
- cyclists commuting to work or out on rides,
- travellers who want a light jacket in their luggage,
- paddlers and swimmers for after training by the water,
- anyone looking for one jacket for spring, autumn and windy summer evenings.
What to Wear Under a Sports Jacket?
- Base layer: a performance T-shirt that wicks sweat away from your skin.
- Midlayer: a technical hoodie for colder days.
- On your head: a cap for rain and sun, or a winter beanie for the cold.
How to Care for a Waterproof Jacket
Hand wash or machine wash at 30 °C with the zips closed and no fabric softener, which clogs the membrane's pores. Air dry it or give it a short tumble dry on low heat to revive the water-repellent finish. When water stops beading, reproof the jacket.
