A foil stabilizer (foil stab, rear wing or tail wing) is the smaller wing at the back of the fuselage that controls your foil's pitch, front to back. The front wing lifts the foil, while the stabilizer keeps it balanced, so together they decide how calm or agile your foil feels. Swapping your stabilizer changes the ride without buying a new set.

Foil Stabilizer Size – Larger or Smaller?
Choose your foil stabilizer size based on your front wing size, your weight and your discipline.

A narrower stabilizer with a shorter chord is faster, but it takes more pitch control.
Foil Stabilizer Shape
A stabilizer's shape affects drag and how it behaves in turns:
- Wide stabilizer (medium aspect ratio): stable and predictable, rolls smoothly into turns. Suited to learning and all-round riding.
- Skinny stabilizer (high aspect ratio): a shorter chord means less drag, more speed and a longer glide when pumping and downwinding.
- Surf stabilizer: designed for turning, with better directional (yaw) control on the wave.
How to Match Your Stabilizer to Your Front Wing
A larger, low aspect front wing needs a larger stabilizer to keep it stable at low speed. A faster, high aspect front wing works better with a skinny stabilizer with less drag. If your foil feels draggy or heavy at speed, try a smaller stabilizer.

- Wing foiling: a medium size for all-round riding, or a larger one in waves and strong wind for a calmer ride.
- Pump foiling: a skinny stabilizer with less drag, so every pump gives you more speed and a longer glide.

Compatibility With Your Fuselage
The stabilizer attaches to the back of your fuselage, so it has to match your foil system, as connections differ between brands. A longer fuselage makes the foil more stable and a shorter one more agile, which adds to the effect of the stabilizer.
How to Care for Your Stabilizer
After riding, rinse your stabilizer with fresh water, especially the screws and the joint with the fuselage. When you take the foil apart, clean the screws and grease them now and then so they don't seize. Protect the edges with a cover or bag.
