The ION Open Palm Mitten 2.5 are open palm neoprene mitts for wing foilers, windsurfers and kitesurfers whose fingers get cold in cooler water but who don't want to lose the feel for their gear.

The thumb is separate, the other four fingers sit together, and there's an opening in the palm. You grip the bar or wing handles with your bare palm, so you get direct feedback from your gear.

The mitt covers your fingers and the back of your hand, where the wind chills you most, while your palm grips as normal. Your fingers aren't squeezed, so they don't get even colder, and you don't end up with sore hands from the harder grip regular gloves demand.

ION Open Palm Mitten 2.5 Benefits

Direct grip on the bar and handles
There's no neoprene between your palm and your gear, so you don't have to squeeze harder than you would bare-handed and your forearms tire less. In its test (issue 79), German magazine Kitelife noted that material resistance when gripping is practically zero.

Warm fingers without the squeeze
Four fingers sit together and warm each other, with the thumb separate for a secure grip. Because your fingers aren't compressed, they don't get colder the way they do in tight gloves.

Fingers out and back in, fast
The edge of the palm opening is finished with a smooth, stretchy material. When you need to sort out your lines or harness, you slip your fingers out and back in quickly.

Material and Technology

The ION Open Palm Mitten 2.5 are made from 2.5 mm neoprene, which offers a balance of warmth and freedom of movement. They sit between thin 1.5 mm and warm 3 mm gloves.

With flatlock seams, the neoprene panels overlap and are stitched together into a strong yet flexible seam. The edge of the palm opening is smooth and stretchy, so your fingers slide through without catching.

Are Open Palm Mitts Cold on the Palm?

Not while you ride. Your palm is wrapped around the bar or handle, so it's far less exposed to the wind than your fingers and the back of your hand, which the 2.5 mm neoprene covers.

Fit and Care

The mitts should fit snugly, with no empty space at the fingertips. Measure around your palm across the knuckles (without the thumb), and if you're between sizes, try them on in our store in Ljubljana.

Rinse them in fresh water after every session and dry them in the shade, never in the sun or on a radiator. For salt, odours and small nicks, use a cleaner or neoprene glue from our wetsuit accessories.
