Downwind SUP Foil Board Designed and Tested on Maui
The Axis Frank Mako is the result of extensive testing on countless Maliko runs and many design iterations and refinements — designed on Maui by Francesco Maffei (Frank Foilboards) with one goal: to create the most user-friendly and high-performance downwind SUP board on the market.
A revolutionary rocker line increases board speed and delivers exceptionally smooth takeoffs with easy release from the water surface. The combination of rocker and rail shape provides excellent stability — which allowed the board to be narrowed for higher speed through the water.
Volume is concentrated at the centre of the board for perfect balance during paddling and foiling. Low volume in the nose and tail reduces swing weight — the board is more agile and behaves shorter than it actually is.
Every Mako comes with a custom-made protective bag with dual-sided zip access, built-in ventilation, and pockets for accessories.
Who is the Axis Frank Mako Downwind SUP Foil Board for?
The Axis Frank Mako is designed for foilers looking for top-level performance and a user-friendly downwind SUP board.
We recommend it for:
- experienced downwind foilers looking for speed and control
- foilers riding open water with high-period swells
- advanced SUP foilers who want maximum energy transfer to the foil
- foilers looking for an agile, responsive board despite its larger dimensions
Why the Axis Frank Mako Downwind SUP Foil Board?
Revolutionary rocker line for higher speed
The innovative rocker line increases board speed and delivers smooth takeoffs with minimal friction against the water surface.
Excellent stability at high speed
The combination of rocker and rail shape maintains stability at high speeds — making it easier to engage the foil and maintain balance.
Fast acceleration and forgiveness
The bottom design enables rapid acceleration while maintaining forgiveness on water touchdowns — even at higher speeds.
Smart volume distribution
Volume concentrated at the centre delivers perfect balance. Low volume in the nose and tail reduces swing weight for a more agile and responsive ride.
Tail rocker for better control
Additional rocker at the tail prevents the tail from touching the water and reduces the risk of losing balance during aggressive tracking.
Maximum energy transfer to the foil
Full carbon construction with a high-density foam sandwich layer ensures every ounce of input energy is transferred directly to the foil.
Technology
The Axis Frank Mako is built with full carbon fiber construction and a high-density foam sandwich layer beneath the stance area — a combination that delivers exceptional stiffness and efficient energy transfer to the foil.
The revolutionary rocker line is engineered for maximum speed and smooth takeoffs. The combination of rocker and rail shape provides stability that allowed the board to be built narrower — and therefore faster through the water.
Additional tail rocker prevents the tail from touching the water and reduces the risk of losing balance during aggressive tracking. The flat top surface provides comfort and a larger area for foot movement — giving riders flexibility across different riding styles.
Volume is concentrated at the centre for optimal balance during paddling and foiling. Low volume in the nose and tail reduces swing weight — the board responds faster and feels shorter than it actually is.
Every Mako comes with a custom-made protective bag featuring a dual-sided zip, built-in ventilation, and pockets for accessories.

About AXIS
AXIS is driven by one idea: foiling should be accessible to everyone — from the first flight to elite performance.
Behind the brand is a New Zealand-based team of engineers, marine architects, and board designers led by Adrian Roper — an internationally recognised innovator with over 40 years of experience in water sports design and manufacturing. The development process is fast and iterative: new concepts go from computer-aided design to on-water testing almost every week.
Inspiration comes from a global community of foilers — from lake riders in America to prone foilers in Western Australia and wing foilers in the canals of Europe. All of that real-world feedback feeds into gear that works in real conditions — for real riders.
